Virginia Beach Middle School
Virginia Beach Middle School was designed by HBA to complement the vision and residential character of the Old Beach Neighborhood. The 924 students including 200 students from the Gifted and Talented Visual Arts programs need 189,000 square feet to accommodate the middle school and arts programs. HBA’s programming, planning and design was critical given the extremely constrained site which necessitated that the classroom wing be 3-stories to accommodate the student population on a small footprint.
The architectural style can be characterized as a blend of the “Beach Cottage” and “Craftsman” style homes of the Old Beach Neighborhood. Utilizing those architectural elements and details HBA designed low and interesting roof lines, roof eave brackets, dormers, Craftsman style window details, shingle style siding above brick foundations, tapered columns, and porch elements at the major entrances. Related to the overall feel, landscaping installations were designed to enhance the Old Beach Neighborhood streetscape with pedestrian friendly sidewalks and indigenous plantings. Virginia Beach Middle School is designed utilizing “green” sustainable design strategies.
