Navy Lodge Expansion – Rota, Spain

HBA has designed hundreds of projects for the Federal Government in its 42 year history. On a few occasions those projects have been OCONUS or Outside [the] contiguous United States.  The Navy Lodge Expansion at Naval Station Rota, Spain is our most recent opportunity and our first in Spain. Through HBA’s IDIQ with NAVFAC LANT, HBA designed the new lodge expansion for the Navy Lodge Program and NEX.

HBA employed G&A Promotores, a local A/E firm in Rota, Spain to assist with the local, regional, and national code and construction requirements for the project as well as Spanish translations. Two of HBA’s team (Maxine Baer and Sebastian Ramos) provided our in-house team with additional translations as well since they are both multilingual. This was más útil! HBA’s design team also included hospitality consultants, David L. Wallace & Associates (of Dunedin, FL). DLW assisted HBA with developing a new suite layout for the facility, a design concept that fit the site, a design that provided a connection to the existing lodge, and a concept that allows space for future expansion.
HBA conducted three design workshops for this project, one to develop the suite layouts, one for the building and siting of the building (both of these at HBA’s Office), then finally one in Rota with all parties including the Base Public Works staff to establish the project’s site and regional requirements.

The end result is a project that will construct a new four story, 6,217 SM (66,920 SF), 50 suite, fully functional Lodge.  The facility will provide new spaces for Check-In, Guest Lounges, Breakfast service/ dining, Admin, Commercial Laundry, Housekeeping, and all necessary support space. Every room will be a two bedroom suite, including a living room, eat-in kitchen, master bedroom/bath and children’s bedroom/bath.  The Navy Lodge program in Rota accommodates families for extended stays while their housing arrangements are made. Their goal for the new lodge (and the resulting design) is to cater to these guests and make that transition as comfortable as possible.

New site amenities include new parking for 74 vehicles, a new playground, multiple outdoor patios and grilling areas and extensive landscaping. A bid option will provide a swimming pool, splash pool, pump house and associated patio areas.  The project will also construct a pair of new tennis courts and a new basketball court adjacent the Fitness Center in another area on Base to offset the demolition of the exiting tennis courts on the project’s site.

The entire facility was designed to reflect and reinforce the existing adjacent Spanish architecture.

Construction is expected to begin this summer with completion slated for 2019. HBA’s entire team is excited about working with the Navy and NEXCOM to see the new Rota Navy Lodge completed!
