New South Norfolk Memorial Library open!

At a well-attended ribbon cutting ceremony, Mayor of Chesapeake Dr. Alan Krasnoff welcomed the public to their new library. Among those present were members of City Council, the Police and Fire departments, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, City and Library staff, MGT Construction and HBA. The residents of the neighborhood turned out in force, despite the heat, and poured into the entrance as soon as the ribbon had been cut. It was exciting to see everyone checking out the new facility, commenting to one another on the many improvements over the previous one. Computers were in use immediately, and the circulation and assistance desks were busy right away checking out books and issuing new library cards.

A neighborhood institution along Poindexter Street for over 50 years, the South Norfolk Memorial Library serves as a community icon and anchor for neighborhood revitalization. The new library is located just steps away from the old one, as a tenant in the Gateway Building, a mixed use building setting the tone for new urbanist development throughout South Norfolk.
