Adopt-A-Family

HBA
Events
This Holiday season, HBA is making the Christmas wishes of a very deserving Virginia Beach family come true. We connected with the Social Worker Services Department of Virginia Beach City Public Schools to sponsor a family through their Holiday Connection program. Read the following description of the family we “adopted,” provided by our contact: “I have a match for you!  It is a family that I work directly with at an elementary school. Twins were found abandoned in a hotel room as their biological mother is a drug addict.  Their new Mom was a distant friend of the family and stepped up to adopt the boys.  One of the children was in Special Ed, but has been exited from the program due to Mom’s diligence in helping him with school.  She is very active at the school.  The family is low income and lives in public housing.  I cannot think of a more deserving family!” We knew from this that we had the right family to help this Holiday season. A wish list was distributed to HBA staff and was soon filled. The response was so amazing that we were able to provide gift cards for the mother as well. Our contact relayed the following after delivering the wrapped gifts

When out in the lobby there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my cubicle to see what was the matter. Away to the hallway I flew like a flash, Tore open the doors and threw away trash. Lights hanging from the dropped ceiling grid Each color was not to be outdid. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a few hanging ornaments and a holiday brew of beer. With delicious treats only slightly previewed, I knew we were moments away from eating party food. More rapid than eagles the caterers they came, They whistled, and shouted, and called each other by name! "Now Drawings! now, Specifications! now, Granites and Soapstones! On, Renderings! On, Selections! everyone take off your headphones! To the lobby! The Ha

HBA Architecture & Interior Design was invited to participate in the First Annual Gingerbread Alley at the Children’s Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth. There are two categories for entries: students/schools/youth groups and adults/businesses. Visitors will select a People’s Choice Award in each category and an award will be donated to the 501 c 3 charity of the entrant’s choice. The process for HBA staff started with a design competition. The theme was open, and the structures had to be constructed of all edible materials except for the base. No artificial materials or interior lighting were allowed. Staff members submitted designs for review by their peers and a unanimous choice was made. The winning design was presented in the form of a model while others were by sketch or photograph. The model gave the true sense of the scale of the house that was to be built. The display case chosen by HBA was the largest offered by the museum. The case was 36” wide by 24” deep by 38” high. The chosen design took advantage of the volume with a very large version of “The Fairytale Cottage”. The design also pushed the limit of the bakery sheet to the point that the widest el
