The Roebuck Apartments
The Security Storage & Safe Deposit Co. Warehouse was built in 1916 in Norfolk, Virginia. Sitting on the water, it has been one of the iconic original buildings that adds to the character and style of downtown Norfolk. Over the years, the warehouse went vacant and was no longer being maintained. In an effort to preserve the historic character of this building while giving it a new life, HBA was commissioned to design the conversion of the warehouse into apartments. Although construction began in 2016, the process of coordinating with the Department of Historic Resources (DHR) to maintain the historical character of the building began long before.
The Roebuck will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments for a total of 57 apartments on four floors. Additionally, there will be a fitness center for the tenants along with a rooftop terrace featuring a cornhole area, a grilling/dining space as well as two fire pits. Most of the original architectural features of the building are retained and showcased within the apartments, making them a unique balance of historic architecture mixed with contemporary design.
